This skier started skiing in 1978
with her club and within a few years became very active in club
activities. The one activity that got the most attention was racing.
Beginning in 1984, she served as Assistant Race Director for two years
before moving on to Rokka League. At the League level, she served as
Assistant to the President. Without her "behind the scenes" activities,
the league would not have had the success it had during her tenure.
In 1982 she became one of the founding
members of the Far West Racing Association. She is the only secretary
FWRA has ever had. Serving as Administrative Assistant to the President,
her functions have been vital to the operations of FWRA.
From 1984 until 1992 she served as
Personnel Director for L.A. Ski Swap, from which proceeds go to help
offset league racing expenses. Some of her biggest contributions are not
only from the offices she has held, but the many hours of "behind the
scenes" assistance. Her unselfish assistance has been prevalent at past
L.A. Council Championships, the FWRA Club Challenge and for all of the
FWRA Championships since 1982. In addition, she has been on staff for
FWSA Ski Week since 1993.
Whatever is needed to be done: seeding,
positing, scoring, starter assistance, or computer operations; she can
be called upon. This skier/racer has sacrificed many "on the hill" ski
days to ensure that races come off, on time and with minimal problems,
if any.
Even though most of her ski time is spent
on non-skiing activities, she still finds enough time to participate in
the races. She even managed to be voted Racer of the Year in 1986 and
1989 by Rokka League. It is appropriate to honor Lynnell Calkins as the
1998 Terry Smith recipient. |
