Far
West Race Championships Return to Heavenly in 2004
The
Far West Championships will be at Heavenly on April 2 through April 4,
2004. Heavenly and the Far West Championships will have many positive
changes for 2004. Heavenly was recently purchased by Vail Resorts and is
undergoing tremendous changes to make Heavenly more skier friendly and
appealing in all areas of the mountain from bars and restaurants to
trails and lifts. The Far West Championships will run the races smoother
to allow the average racer more time to ski the mountain, and make the
weekend more social and fun.
Lodging
specials are available at the Horizon Casino Resort in Stateline, NV,
just mention the Far West Race Championships when making your personal
reservation. The Horizon will also host our dinner and awards party on
Saturday night. This year, to make the event more social and festive, we
will be having a sit down dinner, an equipment raffle, followed by the
awards from Saturday’s race, and dancing to a local DJ.
FWRA
members will receive a 25% discount on all Heavenly and Lake Tahoe logo
merchandise at seven Heavenly Sports locations. Complimentary shuttles
will be provided between the Horizon Hotel and Heavenly. Complimentary
hot chocolate, oranges and water will be provided at the base of the
race venue. Stadium bleachers will also be at the bottom of the race
venue. Lift tickets will be discounted for all ages, for example, an
adult 2-day lift ticket is $88.00, 3 out of 4 day is $119.00, and 4 out
of 5 is $169.50; for 13-18 years old the prices are $81.00, $119.00, and
$155.00; for children 6-12 and Seniors 65+ the prices are $50.50,
$73.00, and $93.50; and children 5 and under are free.
Reno/Tahoe
International Airport features many daily non-stop flights from almost
all West Coast airports. The Reno/Tahoe Airport is located a short 75
minute ride from Heavenly and the Horizon Casino Resort. Comfortable and
convenient transfer service to and from the Airport is available via the
Tahoe Casino Express.
Race
registration will be available Thursday night at the Horizon Casino from
6:00 to 9:00 PM, and Friday from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM at Heavenly in the
Cal Bar and Saturday morning from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM at Heavenly in the
Cal Bar again.
On
Friday, we will have six pacesetter races on East Bowl and World Cup.
These will include three Slaloms and three Giant Slaloms. Race Training
will also be available through the Heavenly Race Department. Call your
Race Chairman to sign up for the Race Training.
On
Saturday we will have six Championship Slalom courses set up for the
various ability classes of competitors on World Cup and East Bowl and
Sunday will be the six Giant Slalom races on the site of previous FIS
World Cup Race Courses.
This
year we had only a few rules changes, pacesetters will now have two
handicaps, one for Slalom and one for Giant Slalom; there will be no
more collapsing of classes; and snowboarders will count as starters for
the Roma McCoy Trophy
The
Far West Race Association is planning a great event for this weekend and
we warmly welcome your participation in our Championships at Heavenly in
2004. We look forward to seeing you at Heavenly, so please contact one
of our clubs in your area through our website at www.fwra.com.
